WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) - Authorities have released the name of a driver killed in a fiery crash that closed M-53 in Macomb County for roughly seven hours.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office said 55-year-old Keith McNeil of Utica died on the highway the morning of Dec. 1, after crashing in a blue Jeep Cherokee that then burst into flans.

After the Washington Township Fire Department extinguished the fire, crews discovered the man dead inside the Jeep. He was the only person inside the vehicle, and no one else was injured in crash.

Witnesses reported seeing the Jeep traveling southbound on M-53, north of 26 Mile Road, when it left the road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then went through the median, struck a pole and caught fire, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities have not said what may have led to the crash.

The crash has left both directions of M-53 closed between 26 Mile and 30 Mile Roads until 5 p.m. Sunday, when the Macomb County Sheriff's Department said the wreckage had been cleared.
