(WWJ) A 19-year-old Southgate man is accused of driving recklessly, causing a fatal crash in Westland.

Gerelle Nathaniel-Romeo Rhan was arraigned via video from the hospital Wednesday afternoon on charges of Second Degree Murder and Reckless Driving Causing Death, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Bond was denied.

Authorities say Rhan was driving "at a high rate of speed and in an aggressive manner" on Merriman Road just before 8 p.m. on May 20, when he ran a red light at Cherry Hill Road, crashing into another car that was crossing the intersection eastbound on Cherry Hill.

Police arrived to find Rhan seriously injured, and the other driver — 48-year-old Chris Tina Ward of Dearborn — dead in her vehicle.

“The alleged actions of the defendant will drastically alter his life, but it will forever and profoundly affect the lives of Ms. Ward’s family and friends,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a statement.

Rhan is still being treated at the hospital, prosecutors said, and will be remanded into custody in the Wayne County Jail once he's released.

He is schedule to appear in 18th District Court in Westland for a Probable Cause Conference on June 4, following by a Preliminary Examination on June 11.
