CHARLOTTE, Mich. (WWJ/AP) -- Authorities in Eaton County are investigating an Amish buggy crash that left three children dead and a fourth seriously injured.

Sheriff's investigators say the horse-drawn buggy was hit from behind by a vehicle around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Vermontville Highway and Bradley Road, according to a report from WLNS-TV 6 in Lansing. Charlotte is roughly 20 miles southwest of Lansing.

Eaton County Undersheriff Jeff Cook said the surviving child was last listed in stable condition at a local hospital. The driver of the vehicle was also taken to a hospital and examined for potential injuries.

A witness to the crash attempted to help the kids, who officials say range in age from 6 to 13.

All of the children were siblings who were reportedly on their way home from school. Their names have not been released.

It's unclear at this time if any charges are being considered in the case, as rhe investigation continues.
