MONROE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -Three fishermen are being treated for hypothermia after they spent about an hour floating in the frigid waters of Lake Erie when their boat sank.

Officials say the group called for help around 6:30 a.m. after their boat started taking on water near Bolles Harbor, off Laplaisance Road not far from I-75 in Monroe Township. While crews were responding to the area, they learned the boat had completely sank about a mile out from Avalon Beach.

One of the men stayed on his cellphone with central dispatch as rescue crews traversed through rough waters looking for the trio. After being in the water for about an hour, they were finally spotted and rescued.

All three men were transported to an area hospital with severe hypothermia. Their current conditions are unknown, but all are expected to recover.

One Coast Guard member was also treated for possible hypothermia symptoms, according to reports.

The air temperature was in the 20s at the time and the surface temperature of Lake Erie was around 47 degrees, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
