LANSING (WWJ) - An early morning fire in Lansing leaves three children dead and four other people in the hospital.

The fire was reported around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home on New York Street, on the city's north side.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames on the first and second floors of the home. A 31-year-old man and 26-year-old woman who were outside the burning home told firefighters they were able to rescue two children, but said three were still inside.

Firefighters rushed into the home and were able to rescue the children, but all three -- ranging in age from 3- to 8-years-old -- died. The family dog was also found dead in the home.

The adults and two other children, ages 18-months and 5-years, were all transported to the hospital. The man and older child have since been transferred to University of Michigan Burn Center; his condition was not provided, but the child is in critical condition. The woman and other child are in stable condition.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
