CANTON (WWJ) - A 38-year-old man who was contracted to perform work on a home in Canton is accused of deliberately setting the house on fire.

Jason Wilkinson, of Waterford, was arraigned Tuesday in 35th District Court on two charges related to a residential structure fire that occurred on Claremont Drive back in February.

Investigators say Wilkinson had been contracted to perform work on the residence, though a motive for the fire was not released. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire, but suffered significant loss of property and damage inside the residence.

The Canton police and fire departments conducted a lengthy investigation into the suspicious fire, resulting in charges being filed by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Wilkinson is charged with second-degree arson, a 20-year felony, and arson -- preparation to burn dwelling, a 10-year-felony. He's also charged as a habitual offender -- fourth offense. Bond was set at $500,000. He's due back in court on Dec. 20.
