GROSSE POINTE (WWJ) - A carjacker got a little more than he bargained for in Grosse Pointe, when the victim turned out to be one of Detroit's most prominent crime fighters.

John Broad, who started the Crime Stoppers organization, was gassing up at the Shell station at Mack Avenue and Moross Road on Wednesday night when he was approached by the suspect, who tried to steal his SUV.

The 80-year-old Broad claims he fought back and was knocked to the ground, but got up and slugged the attacker again. The suspect got away, but was later caught by police.

Broad says for the first time, he truly knows what it feels like to be a crime victim.

Charges against the suspect are pending.
