Coulter said, like everyone else, he had to wait a little bit longer to get the results back, because so many people voted from the safety of their homes.

"It was such a huge absentee election," Coulter told WWJ Newsradio 950 on Wednesday. "And we knew it would be, and we knew there would be consequences of that."

"But I think for the most part out clerks...rose to the challenge, and they did a good job," he added. "And most of the clerks around the county (delivered) very timely results, and I think it was a good practice run for November, because I knew we'll have a higher turnout then."

Coulter will take on Republican Mike Kowall, a long time former lawmaker, in November.

"You know, I'm just really grateful to the voters," Counter said. "I think they judged me by my record as County Executive and mayor before that, and the work that we did during COVID and the economic recovery. And I'm just grateful that they've seen the work that we've done and rewarded me as they have."

Coulter was appointed to executive position after the death L. Brooks Patterson.
