(WWJ) Friends of a Detroit woman did not let the global pandemic stop them from celebrating her 103rd birthday.

20 members of St. Paul AME Church gathered outside Mother Talu Massey’s apartment near Eastern Market Wednesday to honor the oldest member of the congregation with a socially distant party.

There were masks, and no hugs, but Massey’s loved ones said it did not make the day any less special.

“We’re just grateful and thankful for the blessing to have her for 103 years, in her right mind,” Reverend Tammy Harris of St. Paul AME Church said. “She can tell you all she’s been through, can tell you all her ups and downs.”

Her friends honored her with a toast.

“We love you,” they said. “We thank God for you.”

What does Mother Massey attribute her long life to?

“The blessing is from the Lord up above,” Massey said.
