(WWJ) The Detroit Zoo animals are smashing pumpkins in honor of Halloween.

The grizzly bears, giraffes, anteaters and vultures received treat-filled pumpkins and other seasonal munchies Wednesday.

Roseville resident, Stephanie Guy says her favorite animal to watch is the grizzly bears. "They tear them up," said Guy. She looks forward to seeing the creations put out by handlers including pinata-like vampires and monsters. The animals also seem to enjoy the event, "oh, they just love it," added Guy.

The treats include pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks and more fall harvest items. It's part of the zoo's comprehensive program of ensuring environments for animals that are ever-changing and appropriately complex.

But it's not just Halloween when this type of activity occurs. Zoo officials say food items are hidden throughout the animals’ habitats or prepared and placed to stimulate natural behaviors such as foraging or stalking all year long.
