ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - A controversial former longtime Macomb County Judge has been found dead in her home in Roseville.

Police say Judge Catherine Steenland's body was discovered in her home and that the death has been investigated as a possible suicide. She was 52.

Steenland was sentenced in November 2018 to probation and community service for leaving the scene of an accident. She retired from Roseville's 39th District Court in late July.

The hit-and-run crash occurred the evening of September 25, 2017 along Gratiot Avenue near McKinnon Street. A 31-year-old man said a woman in a red sedan hit his car and drove away. He provided officers with the license plate number and a description of the driver responsible for the crash, which was also seen by other witnesses, according to prosecutors. An investigation by Michigan State Police identified Steenland as the suspect. The Macomb Daily reported that Steenland was on medical leave at the time of the crash.
