PONTIAC (WWJ) - A former mayor of Pontiac has been sidelined by a health challenge. But he's still fighting to make a difference.

Willie Payne is headed to the Mayo Clinic as he fights to regain his health.

"I've developed peripheral neuropathy, that's nerve damage, and it has affected my ability to move, to walk, to stand,"  Payne told WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas.

He may not be able to walk due to his illness, but that's not slowing him down. Payne is still making a difference with a new children’s book that he hopes will help improve police-community relations.

A former officer himself, Payne says the book will go a long way in changing negative perceptions of police. He says often adults teach children to fear police.

"As much as citizens fear police, police fear citizens," he said.

Payne's book, "My Friend the Policeman" is available for purchase on Amazon.
