(WWJ) The Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge over the Trenton Channel, better known as the "free bridge" is closed, and will be for about six months.

It bridge is shut down as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, for scheduled maintenance.

Wayne County officials announced that the free bridge will undergo "long-awaited" repairs and rehabilitation during the 2020 construction season, to be completed in phases:

  • Phase I (foundation improvements): The work that was originally planned as phase 1 will include foundation rehabilitation, which entails reinforcing the existing foundation, most of which is underwater. This work will require highly specialized expertise and equipment. The design is expected to be completed in summer 2020.
  • Phase II (superstructure improvements): The work will entail removing and replacing deteriorated structural members. The design for Phase II has been completed and rehabilitation work is being bid out. Work is expected to take place throughout the entire 2020 construction season.

"Despite the current COVID-19 pandemic, Wayne County maintains its commitment to improving infrastructure for residents and visitors alike," the county said in a statement. "It is expected that the bridge will remain closed for an extended period throughout the summer and into the fall with a projected re-opening in December 2020, barring any unforeseen delays or inclement weather."

Motorists traveling on and off Grosse Ile during this time are urged to should plan ahead. When the free bridge, one of only two Grosse Ile bridges, was suddenly closed late last year for emergency repairs, police urged residents to be patient, and drive with care.

The following detours are recommended:

  • Traffic traveling into Grosse Ile Township from the City of Trenton - detour at Grosse lle Parkway and Jefferson Road, proceed northbound to West Jefferson Road toward Bridge Road for access to the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge.
  • Traffic traveling from Grosse Ile Township into the City of Trenton - detour at Meridian Road and proceed northbound for access to the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge.

Meanwhile, the WWJ Traffic Center reports the county completed minor improvements to the Jefferson Avenue Bridge over Monguagon Creek, near the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge, Wednesday afternoon.
