GROSSE ILE (WWJ) - Another Grosse Ile bridge closure could tie up traffic. The good news is, this time it won't be for too long.

Officials have announced that the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge over the Trenton Channel — better known as the "free bridge" —  will close temporarily to vehicle traffic on Thursday, February 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m

It's for a kind of inspection.

According to the Wayne County Executive, the county is required by The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to conduct quarterly Pier Elevation Surveys to check for changes in settlement and elevation.

Motorists who frequently travel the bridge are being advised to plan for extra travel time and to use the toll bridge, which is the only other way on or off the island, during the time of the closure.

"Wayne County is committed to the safety of our residents and motorists and will continue to proactively work alongside community officials," said Whitney Lewis Deputy Director of Communications for Wayne County.

There was a lot of grumbling in Grosse Ile back in November, when the free bridge was closed for about a week for emergency repairs. After it reopened, to much delight, officials announced that the bridge would be closed once more to undergo extensive rehabilitation work during the 2020 construction season, to completed in phases.
