(WWJ) Federal authorities are investigating after a disturbing discovery at the Canadian border: a human brain in a mason jar.

The brain, which was tabled "Antique Teaching Specimen," was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in international mail at Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron last week.

CBP says border agents found the brain on Valentine's Day while searching a Canadian mail truck that was headed from Toronto to Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Speaking to WWJ's Sandra McNeill, Watch Commander April Donahee would not say to whom the brain belonged or offer any details about its intended recipient.

Donahee said the seizure was a matter of public safety.

"Because a human brain would be considered a biological," Donahee explained. "And with that we need to ensure that it doesn't contain any infectious disease or any other hazardous concerns, you know, to human health."

Officials noted that there was no paperwork or proper documentation included with the brain.

“Individuals looking to import shipments such as this, need to remember that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a strict Import Permit Program that must be adhered to,” said Area Port Director Michael Fox, in a statement. “This is just another great example of just one of the many things CBP officers do to protect our nation on a daily basis.”

Officials are in contact with the CDC over what to do with the brain.
