HARPER WOODS (WWJ) - Drivers were backed for miles on I-94 due to a serious crash in the middle of Friday's afternoon commute.

The crash happened in the Harper Woods area, shortly before 5 p.m.

For a couple of hours, I-94 westbound was completely closed west of 8 Mile Rd. near Allard, with the left lane also blocked on the eastbound side. Traffic was being forced to exit at Allard, with police directing traffic at the scene.

Just before 7 p.m., the scene had cleared, with freeway back open to traffic in both directions. However, drivers were told to expect some residual backups.

According to Michigan State Police Mike Shaw, one person was seriously injured in the wreck, although no information about the person was released.

Other details, including how many vehicles were involved or what led to the crash, are also unclear at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
