MONROE (WWJ) - A late night at work is being blamed for a deadly crash in Monroe.

The crash happened around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday on North Custer Road across from Ruff Drive, west of Telegraph.

Officers arrived to find an older model Dodge Ram pickup truck had collided head-on with a tree near the River Walk along the River Raisin. The driver, a 40-year-old man, was alive but unresponsive and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital where he died during surgery.

Police say driver fatigue is believed to be a contributing factor of the crash, as the man had just ended his midnight shift and had worked the day prior. Investigators talked with witnesses who did not report excessive speeds or erratic driving prior to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact police at 734-243-7500.
