Lost Your Job? Health Care Coverage Is Available To Michiganders

Here is what you need to do to get insured

(WWJ) If you are out of work and lost your health insurance, help is available. 

State officials say Michiganders who find themselves in this position during the COVID-19 crisis may qualify for low or no-cost health care options through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace, Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Consumers have 60 days after losing their health coverage due to a job loss or change in income to apply for coverage.  

“Michiganders who lose employer-based health insurance may have options to continue or replace their coverage,” said DIFS Director Anita G. Fox. “If consumers have questions about enrolling, DIFS is available to assist.”

To determine eligibility, consumers should visit www.healthcare.gov. Depending on your income and situation, you may qualify for cost sharing reductions, premium tax credits, coverage for your children (CHIP), or Medicaid.

Details on how to apply

  • When a consumer loses essential health coverage, they may be eligible to enroll in an individual health plan during a Special Enrollment Period. 
  • If consumers are new to www.healthcare.gov, they can create an account. If they already have one, they may log in to start or update an application.
