ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - An Eastpointe man is hospitalized under police guard after he allegedly carjacked a woman, then crashed into a house.

At around 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, Royal Oak police said they got a 911 call about a carjacking at the Mobile gas station at Woodward Ave. and 13 Mile Rd. The caller told police that a man stole a red Honda CRV from a a woman, along with her cellphone, then fled.

While officers were en route to the scene, the department received several more 911 calls that someone crashed a red Honda vehicle into a home, and then ran off.

Officers said they arrived to find the stolen vehicle had struck a telephone pole, a wooden fence and then a house on Ferncliff and 13 Mile Rd. Luckily, no one was inside the home at time of the crash.

Officers set up a perimeter and began a K9 track before they got another call from an Exxon gas station on 13 Mile. The clerk told police that a man was inside the store claiming he'd been assaulted by an unknown person. Officers responded and discovered that the man was the alleged carjacker they were looking for, police said.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested and is being treated at William Beaumont Hospital for injuries he suffered in the crash.  No one other than the suspect was injured.

His name is being withheld pending formal charges.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information is asked to call the Royal Oak Police Department Criminal Investigation Division Lt. Albert Carter at 248-246-3456.
