DETROIT (WWJ) - Investigators are working to determine what caused a house fire that killed a man on Detroit's east side.

Firefighters responded to a home on Guilford Street, in the area of Mack Avenue and Cadieux Road, just before 4 a.m. Wednesday.

"On arrival, people that had escaped the building told our firefighters there was someone trapped in the basement," Detroit Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell told WWJ's Dan Jenkins.

Firefighters went into the home and found the man, but there wasn't much they could do.

"We made entry and pulled out a male between 50- and 60-years-old, he was suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead," said Fornell.

Investigators don't suspect foul play, though a cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

"At this point, we don't know exactly what caused the fire but investigators are telling me that it started in the basement and it appears to be accidental," said Fornell.

An investigation is ongoing.
