DETROIT (WWJ) -- A man who was trapped in a collapsed utility trench on Detroit's east side Monday afternoon is recovering at a local hospital.

Authorities say the man was working in a trench on a utility line about eight feet down, when the sides collapsed, leaving him buried up to his chest. The incident happened in the backyard of a home around 3:30 p.m. on University Place, near I-94.

A Detroit fire rescue crew freed the man Monday evening after several hours.

Detroit Fire Deputy Commissioner Dave Fornell tells WWJ the worker is in good spirits and was taken to Ascension St. John Hospital. The man's condition was not disclosed.
