DETROIT (WWJ) - Drivers in Detroit can expect a bit of a mess near the I-96/Southfield Freeway interchange in the coming weeks, as the Michigan Department of Transportation announced some upcoming ramp closures.

MDOT says the ramps from westbound I-96 to M-39, the Southfield Freeway, and the from M-39 to eastbound I-96  are expected close Friday, Oct. 18 for emergency bridge repairs.

The project will be just a bit delayed as it was initially announced to begin on Oct. 11.

MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross said the closures are expected to last about three weeks.

"If we have perfect weather, we'll be out of there in three weeks," Cross told WWJ. "But should we have some very cold temperatures or we get a lot of rain, that may be extended that we end up going some time into November."

Cross says the concrete on the bridges had eroded so badly in places that the freeway below could be seen through the holes last spring on the city's northwest side. Officials are hoping to correct the issues now to avoid major problems in the winter months.

"It will be tough. I fully acknowledge it’s going to be a rough ride, especially Monday morning, if people hadn’t heard about it or people weren’t expecting it or they forgot about it," Cross said.

The ramp from the Southfield to eastbound I-96 is a major thoroughfare for many commuters to get to work in downtown Detroit.

There will be few different detours available for drivers looking to get around the construction:

  • Drivers headed westbound on I-96 looking to head north on the Southfield can continue west to Telegraph Road and take it north to eastbound 8 Mile Road and rejoin the Southfield northbound.
    • OR: Take Telegraph south to eastbound Ford Road and take Ford back to the Southfield.

  • Drivers looking to head west on I-96 from the Southfield can exit at Grand River Avenue and take that east to rejoin I-96. The ramp to I-96 from Grand River is near Schaefer Highway.
