DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Average gas prices statewide have risen 5 cents from a week ago to about $2.66 per gallon.

That's according to Dearborn-based auto club AAA Michigan, which said Monday that the average price for self-serve regular unleaded is about 27 cents less than a year ago. AAA says lower demand as fall approaches is anticipated to push prices lower.

The state's highest average was in the Ann Arbor area at around $2.73. The lowest prices were in the Traverse City area at $2.38 per gallon.

Prices in the Detroit area were about $2.72 per gallon on average, according to AAA, which surveys daily fuel prices at 2,800 gas stations across the state.

Late Monday afternoon, GasBuddy.com showed the best deal to be found in metro Detroit was $2.35 a gallon, at the Circle K, located at 21860 West Rd. and Hall Rd. in Woodhaven. For those with memberships, gas was available for that same price at CostCo and Sam's Club in Madison Heights.

The most expensive reported price, at a whopping $3.49 a gallon, could be found at the BP station at 39600 Ann Arbor Rd. E., near I-275 in Plymouth.

Meanwhile, according to GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHann, the national average was poised to drop to its eight straight week -- just barely -- falling 1.9 cents a gallon versus the previous week. As of Sunday evening, the nationwide average was $2.547/gallon, the lowest since March 17.
