MONROE (WWJ) - Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that left a woman dead on Christmas Eve.

The fire took off just before 9 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment home on Tremont Street, in a neighborhood off Elm Avenue and North Monroe Street.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find tenants evacuating and learned that a woman was still trapped inside one of the apartments. Due to heavy smoke and flames, firefighters were unable to immediately enter the building.

Once the fire was extinguished, crews entered the duplex and discovered the woman's body. No information about the victim was released.

A cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

An investigation is ongoing.
