GARDEN CITY (WWJ) - A motorcyclist is dead after crashing into the side of a SMART bus during a police chase in Wayne County.

An Inkster police officer was on patrol around 9:44 p.m. Tuesday when, according to Michigan State Police, a motorcycle ran a red light on Middlebelt Road. The officer activated their emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop, but the motorcycle fled.

Officers pursued the motorcycle northbound onto Henry Ruff, where the motorcycle ran another red light and crashed into the side of a SMART bus.

The motorcyclist, identified as a 40-year-old Westland man, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police have not said whether any passengers were on the bus or if there were any other injuries.

The officer's patrol vehicle is equipped with an in-car camera which recorded the entire pursuit, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation.
