LANSING (WWJ) - Several patients and staff members at state psychiatric hospitals have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Michigan Department of Health and Humans Services announced Tuesday evening it is dealing with at least six confirmed cases of COVID-19 among patients and staff.

Two positive patients are at Walter Reuther Psychiatric Hospital in Westland and one is at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Saline. In addition, three staff members at Walter Reuther have tested positive.

Several weeks ago, isolation units were equipped in each of the state’s five psychiatric hospitals. Additional cleaning measures have been undertaken at the facilities and staff and patients have been monitored closely for COVID-19 symptoms for the last two weeks. Hospitals also stopped allowing visitors two weeks ago.

No additional information was provided about the patients or staff who tested positive.

As of Tuesday afternoon, nearly 1,800 positive cases of coronavirus have been reported statewide, with at least 26 deaths.
