STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A 49-year-old man was killed late Friday night while trying to walk across Hall Road in Sterling Heights.

The incident happened around 10:14 p.m. along eastbound Hall Road just east of Schoenherr Road.

Police say officers were in the area when they came across the crash scene. The victim, a Shelby Heights man, was struck near the crosswalk and pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial investigation revealed that a white Nissan struck the pedestrian, then fled the area east on Hall Road. A witness was able to follow the vehicle and obtain a plate number. Chesterfield Police were able to locate the Nissan and its driver shortly after the crash. The driver, a 50-year-old man, is said to be cooperating with the investigation.

A black Range Rover may have also been involved in the crash and was located after the initial investigation.

Police say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors "with the motorists" involved in the crash. Other circumstances leading up to the crash, including the pedestrian's actions, are still under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any other information is asked to contact police at 586-446-2920.

The southeast corner of Hall and Schoenherr was closed for about three hours while police were investigating, but has since reopened to traffic.
