ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - A warrant is being sought for the cellphone of a Toledo man involved in a crash along I-94 that killed a 1-year-old boy.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. Tuesday on eastbound I-94 at Martin Road, between 11 Mile and 12 Mile roads in St. Clair Shores.

According to Michigan State Police, a van was traveling in the left center lane when it changed into the left lane and rear-ended a passenger car. A 1-year-old boy, who police said was properly restrained in a car seat, was killed in the crash. Both drivers were also seriously injured.

Police initially arrested the driver of the van, a 37-year-old Toledo man, but released him after further investigation. Initially, investigators said they didn't want him to have the opportunity to leave the state before charges could be pursued.

Investigators say witnesses saw no signs of braking before the crash, leading them to wonder if the driver was perhaps distracted at the time.

"There's no reason ever, ever, ever to rear-end the vehicle in front of you. There's just no reason -- unless there's something that you're doing that you shouldn't be," said Lt. Mike Shaw.

A GoFundMe page to help the family with expenses identified the child as Chase Allen, who just turned one at the end of August. The page states that Chase's mother, Stephanie, was on the way to drop him off before starting her second day of work at Beaumont Hospital when a tire blew out on her car. She stopped along the shoulder and was waiting for help when the collision happened. The posting says she suffered several broken ribs and a possible broken spine in the crash, not to mention a broken heart with the loss of her only child.
