WARREN (WWJ) - Police say speed appears to be a factor in a rollover crash that left one person dead and another fighting for her life.

The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. Saturday along northbound Dequindre Road at Stephens Road in Warren.

"Our preliminary investigation shows that the Jeep may have been traveling at a high rate of speed and clipped the rear end of the Dodge Avenger while changing lanes," Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer told WWJ's Christina McDaniel. "The Jeep then lost control, striking a pole, rolled over. The female occupant was ejected from the Jeep while the male occupant was trapped underneath it."

A 23-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. A 22-year-old woman was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Their names have not yet been released.

"It's unclear at this time who was actually driving the Jeep," said Dwyer. "We're not sure if drinking or alcohol is involved, but it appears that it was caused by traveling at a high rate of speed and then losing control of the vehicle."

No other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
