GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) - A small tornado may have touched down Wednesday night in Grand Rapids.

The National Weather Service is expected to assess the damage and make a determination Thursday.

"A strong storm rolled in off the lake and it got stronger as it moved east and collided with an outflow boundary from storms that were farther north. When that happened, that outflow boundary provided a nice little catalyst to spin up a potentially small tornado," NWS meteorologist Walt Felver told WWJ's Beth Fisher.

Felver said a roof was ripped off of an apartment building and a few homes in the Belknap Lookout neighborhood. Roughly 28,000 homes and businesses in the surrounding area are without power.

"There was lots of damage," he said. "We have 11 cars with windows blown out in a parking lot, damage to a shuttle waiting structure as well, lots of tree limbs down, that type of thing, on the north side."

No injuries were reported.
