IDA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- A Rochester Hills man is dead following a crash involving a box truck in Monroe County Monday morning.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the victim, identified as 32-year-old  Rafal Czekaj, was heading southbound on Lewis Avenue in his red Pontiac Vibe when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound Chevrolet box truck, just north of Rauch Road in Ida Township.

Police say a 30-year-old from Toledo, Ohio, was driving the truck, with a 26-year-old, also from Toledo, riding as a passenger. When the vehicles collided, the Pontiac spun counterclockwise and came to a rest facing northbound in the southbound lane. The truck, meanwhile, overturned and came to a rest on its roof in a ditch on the east side of Lewis.

Authorities say Czekaj was not wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both men in the truck were wearing seatbelts and were both uninjured. They were released at the scene.

Police are still unsure what caused Czekaj to cross the center line, but authorities do not believe excessive speed or alcohol were a factor in the cause of the crash.

Monroe Community Ambulance, the Bedford Township Fire Department and the Ida Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.

As the investigation continues, anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information about it is asked to call 734-240-6015.
