DETROIT (WWJ) - With a mid-week snowstorm descending on southeast Michigan Wednesday night, drivers can expect a slippery morning commute on Thursday.

Snow began falling near the Michigan-Ohio border shortly after 6 p.m. and most communities near Detroit began seeing it after 8 p.m. AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson said it was expected to snow on and off throughout the night into the morning.

Drivers should allow for extra time to get to work Thursday morning.

"The snow continues overnight into tomorrow morning," Thompson said. "Expect a slick morning commute tomorrow. It could be as much as a couple of inches of snow on the ground."

The snow is expected to continue falling off and on throughout the day Thursday.

By the time it's all over, Thomspon says the hardest-hit areas could have half-a-foot of snow piled up; while some communities will get less.

"We're expecting a total snow accumulation on the order of three to six inches near and south of I-94. Farther north, more of a one to three inch snowfall," Thompson said. "And I think the heaviest snowfall rates tonight will be near and south of Detroit."

Also on the way: a couple of bitter cold nights. AccuWeather is calling for low temperatures in the single digits both Thursday and Friday before a little warm-up for the weekend.
