ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - Authorities say a discarded cigarette may be responsible for a house fire that killed a man in St. Clair Shores.

Firefighters were called around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday to the 27000 block of Princeton, not far from 11 Mile Road and I-94, and found flames coming from the home.

After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found the body of a man believed to be in his 60s.

The St. Clair Shores fire chief says preliminary information points to the fire being accidental and caused by a discarded cigarette.

The home has fire and smoke damage, but could be repaired.

Neighbor Sandy Pareese said the victim was a kind man who kept to himself.

"I'm going to miss talking to him," she told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "When I take the grandkids for a walk around the block, sitting out on the porch and chitchatting with him."

The fire remains under investigation.
