Suspect With Loaded AR-15 Tries To Outrun Police, Gets Stuck In Traffic

DETROIT (WWJ) - A man who tried to flee from police wound up getting arrested after he got stuck in a traffic backup that he was initially trying to avoid. 

The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. Friday on northbound Lodge Freeway near Livernois. Troopers were responding to a car fire on the service drive when they saw a vehicle reversing up the closed freeway entrance ramp where someone had moved the traffic barricades.

Troopers conducted a traffic stop and when they walked up to the vehicle, the driver turned in the direction of of one of the troopers and drove back onto the freeway.

Troopers went after the suspect vehicle, which quickly got stuck in backed up traffic on the freeway. Speeds did not exceed 20 mph.

Troopers stopped the vehicle and the driver was arrested for fleeing and eluding. As it turns out, the driver was currently on probation for a felony firearm charge. 

During a search of the vehicle, troopers found an AR-15 rifle in the trunk loaded with a 30 round magazine.

The suspect was also charged with felon in possession and lodged pending prosecutor review.
