DETROIT (WWJ) - A change is coming to the Detroit People Mover — of direction!

"Same ride, different route," said the Detroit Transportation Corporation (DTC)  as it announced Friday that the People Mover will operate in the opposite direction, along its 2.94-mile single track encircling Downtown Detroit, during four weekends in February. The change will then become permanent beginning Sunday, March 1.

The People Mover has run clockwise around the city since 2008.

Why the change? Officials say it's about the steel wheels. The reverse in direction will allow them to maintain an even pattern of wear.

Officials said they want to provide advance notice to allow patrons commuting or attending events who may need to allow themselves time for additional People Mover stops.

The change of direction will not include the weekend of February 22-23, during the Nation of Islam Saviours’ Day Convention.
