WATERFORD TWP. (WWJ) - A Waterford Township police officer has been charged with sexual assault.

According to Waterford Police Chief Scott Underwood, Officer Kevin Thompson was placed on unpaid administrative leave back in May, when the department learned that he'd been charged two counts of criminal sexual conduct, 3rd degree, by the Genesee County Prosecutor.

The alleged incident took place while Thompson was off-duty, Underwood said, and did not happen in Waterford Township.

Underwood said Thompson, who has been on the force for two years, will remain on leave without pay until his criminal case is resolved.

No details about the alleged sexual assault were immediately released.
