(WWJ) - Thousands of homes and businesses across metro Detroit are without power after strong winds and heavy rain overnight.

DTE Energy said Tuesday morning that crews were working to fix about 18,000 power outages.

Widespread outages are reported in Farmington near 8 Mile and Merriman, in Madison Heights near 11 Mile and John R, and in Grosse Pointe near Mack Avenue and Moran. There's also a major outage in Lapeer County, just east of Flint.

DTE says crews are assessing and repairing the damage. While most residents and businesses should have power restored by the end of the day, some may not be back on until Wednesday.
