Woman Killed, Child Injured In I-75 Construction Zone Crash

(WWJ) Distracted driving is suspected in a deadly crash along I-75 in Monroe County.

Michigan State Police say 25-year-old woman driving a minivan at around 9:40 a.m. Monday, when she crashed into the back of a commercial box truck that was slowing down on northbound I-75 near Laplaisance Road due to road construction.

The woman, who was trapped inside he vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not immediately released. 

The woman's 2-year-old son was safely removed from the van and sustained only minor injuries, police said. 

The truck driver was not hurt. 

While the investigation is ongoing, police said distracted driving is believed to have been a factor. 

Northbound I-75 was closed for several hours at S. Otter Creek Rd. while State Police investigated. MSP Troopers were assisted on the scene by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe Township Fire Department, LaSalle Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.
