TROY, Mich. (WWJ) -- A large stretch of northbound I-75 was shut down for emergency pothole repairs Monday afternoon.

The Michigan Department of Transportation confirmed to WWJ that NB I-75 will be closed between I-696 and M-59 for several hours Monday evening after multiple vehicles suffered flat tires in the area earlier in the day.

MDOT announced shortly after 5:30 p.m. that southbound I-75 would be going down to one lane between Square Lake Road and I-696. All entrance ramps to SB I-75 in that nine-mile stretch will be closed.

Drivers can expect big delays in the area.

MDOT says those seeking alternate routes while traveling north should consider taking Rochester Road north to M-59. Other main north-south arteries in the area could serve the same purpose, depending on where drivers are traveling to.

MDOT officials did not have an estimate on when the interstate will reopen, but did initially tell WWJ that it should only take a few hours.
