WARREN (WWJ) - Former Macomb County clerk Karen Spranger, wanted on a larceny charge, has been arrested.

Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950, Warren police confirmed that Spranger was in custody.

Police said she was found late Thursday afternoon in the area of 12 Mile Road and Mound in Warren. They did not immediately not offer any details about what led officers to her, but reports say she was arrested at Tim Horton's.

Just a day ago Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith announced formal charges against Spranger, who is accused of stealing more than $1,600 from an elderly Warren woman.

Smith said Spranger, who is in her 60s, was working as a caregiver for the 78-year-old victim when she used her ATM card eight times without permission.

Releasing bank security photos of Spranger on Wednesday, Smith asked for tips to find the ex-clerk, whom police had not been able to track down. "Do the right thing and turn yourself in," Smith said, speaking directly to Spranger.

While Spranger has no known home address, Smith said investigators believed she was still in the metro Detroit area.

Spranger was removed from her position as Macomb County Clerk after it was discovered she'd lied about her residency on documents she filed to run for office. She was also accused of kicking an employee before her ouster in in March of 2018.

A police report obtained by WWJ's Charlie Langton showed Spranger was listed as a suspect accused of aggravated assault; allegedly having used "personal weapons (hands, feet, teeth)" in an incident back in February. No assault charges have been filed.
