FLINT (WWJ/AP) - The parents of a 4-year-old girl are facing charges after she shot herself with a loaded gun she found in a closet with her toys.

Eric Brown, 32, and Alicia Brown, 31, were at home Monday with their four children when one of their twin daughters shot and wounded herself with the gun. The bullet hit the girl's left index finger, which had to be amputated.

The Browns are each charged with second-degree child abuse, obstruction of justice and lying to police. Eric Brown is also facing a felony firearm charge.

Investigators say the couple routinely stored handguns and rifles in the same closet where the kids' toys were kept. There was no gun safe in the home.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton calls it a terrible, tragic and preventable accident.
