ROMULUS (WWJ) - Heartbreaking details being released by police in connection with an accident that turned deadly for a young girl.

A 7-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was struck and killed after she got out of a car that had just been involved in an accident along I-94 early Sunday morning.

Michigan State Police say the accident happened around 3:30 a.m. along the eastbound side of the freeway near Merriman. Troopers were initially called to the scene of a crash near Inkster Road, where a woman said she hit something, but nothing was found. Then troopers were informed that Romulus police were investigating a separate crash near Merriman involving a drunk driver.

It was found that the young girl had gotten out of the vehicle after it crashed -- she had been texting police saying she needed help, but was hit and killed when she got out of the vehicle.

The suspected drunk driver -- who is the girl's father -- has been taken into custody, while the other driver was released.

The accident closed the freeway near Metro Airport for several hours.
