Police: Arsonist At Large After 3 Fires Set At Oakland University

June 22, 2018 - 6:51 pm

ROCHESTER (WWJ) - Three arson fires at Oakland University are being investigated by campus police.

According to OU Police Chief Mark Gordon, a fire was set in the women's bathroom on the third floor at South Foundation Hall Thursday night, causing serious smoke damage.

Speaking to WWJ's Zahra Huber on Friday, Gordon said they've seen a couple of similar incidents over the last couple of months.

"The two before that, it's my understanding that it was very minor. It appears that perhaps something was lit, but it didn't really take off," he said. "In fact, we weren't even notified until last night of those other two incidents. So it appears that whatever was damaged at that point was just cleaned up by the custodial staff."

Another fire was set Jube 1 in the same bathroom as Thursday night's fire, the chief said, and a third was set in a second floor men's room in Hannah Hall back in May.

As an investigation continues, Oakland University Police Department would like all campus community members to consider the following:

  • If you see anyone or anything suspicious on campus, contact the OUPD immediately.
  • If you see or smell smoke on campus, call 911 and activate the nearest fire alarm pull station.
  • Except when a building is in lockdown status, evacuate the building if a fire alarm sounds.
  • If a fire alarm sounds in a building that is in lockdown status, evacuate the building only if your life is threatened by fire or smoke.

No injuries were reported in connection with any of the fires. No suspects have been describe, and police are now looking for tips in the case.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call the OUPD at 248-370-3331. You may also submit an anonymous tip to oupolice.com/tip.
