WARREN (WWJ) - A 61-year-old man is in custody after the car he was driving struck and seriously injured a young boy who was crossing a busy road, according to police.

The boy, who was taken to Children's Hospital in Detroit, was hit as he was crossing 8 Mile Road just east of Dequindre - around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The driver was arrested at the scene, believed to have been driving under the influence of drugs.

Britney James works at a plaza near the accident scene and came to the aid of boy.

"A lot of people stopped," said James. "The guy that hit him - he stopped, he stayed there, a bunch of people were running in and out. We gave him water to pour on his leg -- they covered the leg up."

She said the boy was screaming in pain with his leg mangled in his bike. "I had to cover my ears," she said of the boy's screams. "It was like cold chills coming to my arms."

Authorities expect charges to be filed in this case.
