DETROIT (WWJ) - A State Police chaplain was injured while trying to help a man who was walking in the middle of a Detroit freeway.

Troopers got a number of calls around 2 a.m. Thursday about a wayward pedestrian in the middle of westbound I-96 near Warren Avenue. When troopers arrived and tried to talk to the man, he started fighting with them.

The chaplain, who was riding along from the Metro South Post, received some minor cuts in the scuffle before the 38-year-old Detroit man was taken into custody.

The man was transported to the Detroit Detention Center. Police say he has not yet been charged or arraigned.

No other injuries were reported.
