Police Chase On Belle Isle Ends In Crash, 19-Year-Old In Custody

July 20, 2019 - 9:08 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 19-year-old parole absconder is back in custody after crashing his vehicle following a police chase on Belle Isle.

The incident unfolded just before 7 p.m. Friday when troopers on the island checked the registration plate on a Dodge Challenger and the owner came back as a parole absconder for carjacking and robbery.

Troopers stopped the vehicle and waited for backup. As a DNR unit arrived, police say the driver took off and went over the MacArthur Bridge onto Jefferson Avenue. Troopers terminated the pursuit, but shortly thereafter saw the vehicle crashed into an electric pole at Jefferson and Van Dyke.

A 19-year-old man who was walking away from the vehicle was stopped and placed under arrest for his warrant violation and fleeing police. A passenger in the vehicle had minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
