He was a retired U-M professor

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - An Ann Arbor man who investigators believe was murdered in his own home was a retired University of Michigan professor.

That's according to police, who on Thursday publicly identified the victim as 76-year-old Robert Sharp.

Sharp's body was found early Monday morning in the basement of his townhouse in the 3300 block of Alpine Drive, near Eisenhower, after a concerned acquaintance asked police to do a welfare check.

Police are treating Sharp's death as a murder, as there were "signs of foul play" at the scene. Police have said they believe Sharp was killed the night before he was found, but -- as an investigation continues -- police are not discussing a suspected cause of death.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Ann Arbor Police Department tip line at 734-794-6939. Tipsters can also call Ann Arbor Police Det. William Stanford 734-323-2628 or send an e-mail to TIPS@A2gov.org
