Police: Impaired Driver Crashes, Dies After High-Speed Chase

June 16, 2018 - 11:26 am

AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - Police say an impaired driver was killed early Saturday morning following a high-speed chase along I-75.

The situation unfolded around 3:30 a.m. when a 2008 Jeep was seen traveling erratically on northbound I-75 near University in Auburn Hills.

Police caught up to the driver, who was "all over the roadway and at high speeds," and a chase ensued. The officer terminated the pursuit just north of Sashabaw Road, according to Michigan State Police, and stopped his patrol vehicle on the left shoulder. The Jeep, per in-car video, can be observed continuing speeding on I-75.

The officer then observed brake lights from vehicles ahead of him nearing the curve, so he continued driving. When the officer rounded the corner, he observed the Jeep had left the roadway to the right and struck a guardrail.

The driver was not wearing his seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries.

The freeway reopened at 7:45 a.m. after being closed for a police investigation. During the investigation, a courtesy patrol van was hit while doing traffic control for the crash. The van driver was not injured. The driver of the vehicle that hit the courtesy patrol van had minor injuries.
