GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - A police officer shot and wounded a man who was apparently threatening to harm himself and officers in western Michigan.

The Grand Rapids Police Department says the 30-year-old man had been sending videos of the threats and an officer found him on foot about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

"He was reported to have a handgun on his person and was threatening suicide, as well as harm to officers if confronted," said Acting Deputy Chief Pete McWatters. "The officers did make contact with him. There was a weapon in possession of the subject. One of our officers did fire rounds at the subject. The subject was struck."

The man was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery. His current condition is unknown.

The officer, who wasn't injured, has been placed on administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation, which is being handled by Michigan State Police.
