Police Search For Person In Water Near Belle Isle Bridge

November 20, 2018 - 7:24 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are searching near the Belle Isle bridge for someone who may have gone into the water.

Michigan State Police say they received a 911 call around 6:10 a.m. Tuesday from a driver who was going over to Belle Isle and noticed a Ford Escape on the bridge with no one in the vehicle. The caller told police they saw footprints in the snow that leads to the rail of the bridge, but didn't see anyone in the area of the footprints.

Troopers responded to the scene and located the abandoned SUV, but couldn't find anyone else in the area.

Police and fire crews are now searching for the person. The U.S. Coast Guard is also searching by boat and helicopter.

Coast Guard Lt. Justin Bommer said search teams may have spotted the body near Milliken State Park.

"We were notified by the Curtis Randolph that they had located a body that matched the description of the potential bridge jumper. However, when the boat got on scene to recover the body, the body went under the water and has not resurfaced," Bommer said.

Local dive teams are now being contacted to aid the search for the body.
